See No Evil

Your basic stalk-and-slash with the added bonus of Kane being generally monstrous. Really bad directions though. 3/5

Leviathan

This bleak Russian drama is rife with symbolism & very open to the viewer's interpretation. Heavy & quiet yet lovely. 4/5

Ballet 422

As a fan of dance I loved seeing the creation process but we never saw the finished product, which was a shame. 3/5

Road to Paloma

Jason Momoa's writer/director debut is a solid piece of drama with strong acting throughout. A good debut. 3.5/5

Cake

Continuing the tradition of Oscar tragedies this year comes "Cake", a tragic yet darkly funny drama. The movie is excellent, but the Oscar travesty here is that Jennifer Ansiton, who will likely never get a richer, more complex, and meaty role as this, was utterly amazing, and, yet, was not nominated. I wish I knew what drugs the Academy was on this year, I truly do, because this was a truly life-changing performance by Aniston and it should have been recognized. A wonderful film. 4.5/5

God Help the Girl

God I hated this - terrible music with nonsensical plot. I turned it off an hour in, which says a lot.  1/5

In Your Eyes

A truly lovely & charming film, right up until the last unbelievable 15 minutes. Kazan is a vision though. 4/5

Selma

So let me get this straight. In a year where Oscar bait films dominated the awards pictures, and lackluster films like "The Imitation Game" and "The Theory of Everything" got awards and nominations left, right, and center... no one nominated David Oyelowo for Best Actor? Really??? I thought his performance was superior to Carrell and Cumberbatch and equal to Redmayne, and "Selma" as a film was far more solid and nuanced that the two I previously mentioned. If you are going to nominate actors from Oscar bait films, David Oyelowo deserved a nomination. At least "Selma" got a nomination, which is comforting. 4/5

We Own the Night

Joaquin Phoenix is marvelous in this, Wahlberg much less so. I wished for more character development. 3/5

The Human Centipede: First Sequence

This is just bad is nearly every way, I don't even know why it became a cult hit. Totally ridiculous. 1.5/5

Oculus

This is the best written and freakiest horror film I've seen in a while. Fantastic acting as well. Not going to sleep. 5/5

Wild

An unflinching & powerful portrait of a woman lost told in a wonderfully non-linear way. Witherspoon was perfect. 4/5
