Louder Than Bombs

This new film by Joachim Trier, who made the spectacular "Oslo, August 31st", is another masterpiece. The non-linear story weaves through the film like bright threads in a tapestry. The effect of watching the past and present merge is magical, and Trier's direction brought a lush richness to the story that it needed. The acting by Byrne, Eisenberg, Huppert, and Druid is also perfection, and they all played off each other in such beautifully subtle ways. I adored this, it's just so lovely and tragic from beginning to end. One of the best I've seen this year. 5/5

Bridge of Spies

This was a very solid drama that felt both expansive and intimate at once, which is no easy feat. The acting was very solid, the plot well paced and well executed, and the direction was engaging. I was pulled into the story and remaining completely entrenched through the end. A solid movie, and not out of place in the Best Picture nominees I think. I was surprised to note the Coen brothers wrote this (at least in part) but Spielberg directed. I think that was a smart choice - this film could have been mishandled easily and, honestly, the Coen's would likely have done so. A fine film. 4/5

Jack Goes Boating

NOT your typical rom-com! This is real, dark, & heartfelt - a very "Only The Lonely" vibe. PSH's direction was subtle and beautiful. Well done - this surprised me. 4/5
